Shri Pratap Chandra Sarangi, Minister of State for Fisheries, AH D & MSME visited CIFRI Pen demonstration site at Rishia reservoir, Balasore, Odisha

Sri Pratap Chandra Sarangi, Honorable Minister of States, of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and MSME, Government of India visited ICAR-CIFRI Pen demonstration site at Rishia reservoir, Balasore on 30 September 2020. Under the leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI is demonstrating CIFRI Pen HDPE® culture technology in Rishia reservoir for in-situ advance fingerling production and stocking in the reservoir. The reservoir is having an area of 300 ha and 112 fishers are involved in active fishing from the reservoir. ICAR-CIFRI has recommended to stock more than 80-100 mm size of fish seed for higher production from the reservoir. As cost of bigger size fish seeds are very high and also not available in high quantity in the market, the reasons fishers’ stock small size fish seed in the reservoir. For this reason ICAR-CIFRI has developed al lowcost in-situ fish seed production technology through CIFRI Pen HDPE for reservoirs and wetlands. Two pens of 0.1 ha each has been installed in the reservoir and 32,000 fish seed were released in the pens by honourable Minister. He also distributed CIFRI CAGEGROW® fish feed to the fishers for feeding in pen culture.

Honourable Minister In his address emphasized on the cooperation and unity among the fishers for their livelihood development. He stressed on the adoption of the pen technology for production of enough amount of advance fingerlings (80-100 mm fish seed) for stocking in the reservoir for enhancing the production from the reservoir. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, CIFRI in his address welcomed the honourable minister and briefed him about the activities carried out by CIFRI in Odisha. He assured the fishers of technical support from ICAR-CIFRI and also the whole hearted support to make the demonstration successful for expansion of the same to produce more fish seed from pen culture. He also informed that from this intervention of ICAR-CIFRI at least 20 ton additional fish production will come from this reservoir.

In afternoon of 30-9-2020, Dr. Das, released 80,000 fish seed in 4 nos of pens of Jalaswar wetland in Paikasidha and Keshapura villages, the demonstration will help to increase the livelihoods of more than 300 families. In another programme, Director, ICAR-CIFRI released 40 thousand fish seed in Sunei dam of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha benefitting 157 fishers of the reservoir. On 29-09-2020, forty women fishers of Mayurbhanj, Odisha were empowered on Ornamental fish farming. Fish seed, fish feed and medicines were distributed to women fishers of Nalagaja and Badasahi villages of Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. ICAR-CIFRI programme on ornamental fish culture has helped the women fishers to culture in the ornamental fish in their backyard in FRP tanks and to improve their livelihood.
