Post Amphan support for Sustainable fisheries development of SC fishers of Sagar island, West Bengal .
ICAR-CIFRI distributed 9000 kg of fish feed, 5000 kg of lime and 800 kg of fish seed to the 250 SC beneficiary of Sagara island on 20-10-2020 under the leadership of Director, ICAR-CIFRI. Sagar Island or Gangasagar is situated in Ganges delta, West Bengal. Most of the people living in the island are economically backward. Like other islands, Sagar Island is also highly vulnerable to cyclone, flood and other natural disasters. The incidence of Amphan cyclone in the recent past caused severe damage in Sagar Island. Amphan cyclone destroyed several homes and other infrastructures in the island. The heavy tidal waves during Amphan caused saltwater inundation in several fish ponds and agricultural lands leading to a huge loss of fisheries and agricultural crops in the island.
In order to address the havoc caused by Amphan cyclone in Sagar island, ICAR-CIFRI under the direction of Dr. B. K. Das, ICAR-CIFRI has taken up an effort to strengthen and uplift the social-economic status of the Amphan cyclone affected community of Sagar Island by providing fisheries inputs like lime, fish feed and fish seed for the restoration of fish production.
In the midst of COVID-19 pandemic situation ICAR-CIFRI team visited Sagar Island on 20th October 2020 under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das. ICAR-CIFRI along with a local NGO SKSVYCS from Sagar island and selected 250 SC families for fisheries livelihood support from 5villages of 4 Granm panchayats. ICAR-CIFRI extended advisory and distributed fisheries inputs to the villagers of Sagar Island, Sundarban for fisheries development. Lime, Fish feed and fish seed were distributed to 250 SC beneficiaries of Sagar Island in the presence of Director ICAR-CIFRI, Local Srapanch and Fisheries Officer of state fisheries department in Sagar Island.
Director, ICAR-CIFRI advised the fishers on the scientific fish culture and also motivated them for integrated faring system, which will provide not only pant-animal protein but also sustainable livelihood for individual households. He also mentioned the day to day care that is required in fish culture. Beneficiaries from 5 villages and 4 Gram Panchayats attended the programme and collected the fish seed, fish feed and lime. The beneficiaries were also provided mango sampling for their kitchen garden.
A dolphin awareness programme was conducted and the fishers of Gangasagar were empowered on the dolphin conservation and their importance for biodiversity. Dr. P. Parida, Scientist coordinated the programme at Sagar Island. The pogramme was supported by Dr. Sanjay Bhowmick, CTO; Mr. Sujit Chowdhury, ACTO; Mr. Manabendra Roy, STA; Ms. Manisha Bhor, YP-II and Ms. Shreya Roy, YP-I of ICAR-CIFRI.
