Exploration of Pong Reservoir, Kangra, HP by ICAR-CIFRI Team.
An ‘Exploratory Survey’ has been made at Pong reservoir, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh by ICAR-CIFRI team on various facets of ecology, fisheries, wild-life interventions towards livelihood of fishers of this reservoir under GIZ sponsored project during 14-20 October, 2020. Dr. B. K. Das, Director of the Institute played pivotal role in taking initiatives while designing the frame work of this exploration. A detailed limnological studies of this water bodies have been done which included assessment of primary production, evaluating present status of limno-chemical profiles, biotic organisms, fish catch data collection, visiting and interacting with different landing centres run by FCSs, wildlife data collection emphasizing on migratory and resident birds thriving therein this water body, interacting with the ADF, Pong and associated Fishery Officers and their activities, modus operandi of revenue generation on fish catch, socio-economic data collection of fishers, their household incomes and other avenues. The survey revealed very larger sized fish catch viz, Labeo catla: 24-27 kg, Labeo rohita: 3.5-9.5 kg, Tor putitora: 3.0-10.5 kg, Sperata seenghala: 2.5-4.5 kg which has never been encountered last few years, reflecting positive impact of COVID19 on ecology and fisheries with serene water quality parameters. Imbibing with the fish catch of higher size the fishers got energised with renewed interests in spreading.
Proper sized cleaned gill nets. Some of the fishers who left fishing for other activities like joining in NREGS activities returned back to fishing generating more revenues from this water body through fishing. The exploratory team was led by Dr A K Das, Principal Scientist & In-charge, Training & Extension Unit along with two technical officials and one YP II did yeomen service even under this pandemic periods put forth positive energy not only to the DoF officials but also towards enhanced livelihood of the fishers thriving therein in Pong reservoir. A formal meeting between the ICAR-CIFRI team and the Director, DoF, Govt of HP has also been arranged at Directorate Office, Bilaspur discussing and sharing knowledge on how to enhance fisheries in this reservoir from its present status and with the knowledge gained through this project activities would be of immense help in formulating package of practices for enhanced fisheries as well as up-scaling livelihood of the fishers of Pong reservoir, HP..
