The Loni wetland is a source of healthy ecology and fish diversity capable of eradicating
poverty, malnutrition of the dependenttribal’s ensuring food security, employment and
livelihood. ICAR-CIFRI, Allahabad centre is making concerted efforts to increase the
economic status of the tribal fishermen of Loni wetland for their livelihood. To a step
forward, Allahabad division of ICAR-CIFRI conducted a mass awareness programme on 8 th
February, 2018 with an objective to motivate the fishermen in transfers of ICAR-CIFRI,
technologies namely enclosure(pen and cage), bio monitoring, spawn prospecting,
connectivity with main river (Tons/Ganga) and other constrains associated with wetlands to
which fishermen of the cooperative society are confronting with. More than 60 tribal
fishermen (including 20 women) and around 30 other fishermen of Loni wetland participated
in the programme. This program inspired fishermen to seek training in enclosure culture
technologies and affiliation with bank to form self help group for making additional
investment in development of wetland through integrated farming system and developing
tourism. The presence of media-D Doordarsan and PTI in the awareness camp, not only
showing interest in giving a coverage but also were impressed to prepare a detail
documentary story. The fishermen of the society were enthusiastic after developing a
confidence in CIFRI scientists through series on interactions including training programme
and increasingly involvement of other agencies including media. Dr R. S. Srivastava, Head,
ICAR-CIFRI, Allahabad welcomed the members of the cooperative society and explained in
detailed the role of CIFRI in development of Loni wetland. Dr. D. N. Jha, Dr. R. Das, Dr.
Kalpana Srivastava, and Dr. S.C.S.Das, Scientists has explained the role of wetland and
technological intervention in improving their economics.
