A 10-days training programme for the 4 th Semester students of M.Sc. Zoology (spl. Fish & Fisheries) of
Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribagh, Jharkhand has been inaugurated at ICAR-CIFRI, Head Quarter,
Barrackpore. A total of 24 students participated in this training programme. Dr. B.K Das, while welcoming
the students in a training session, emphasized on the importance of inland fisheries management to
ensure the life & livelihood of rural India. Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Head, FREM Division, ICAR-CIFRI, urged the
students to go for advanced training on molecular genomics including nutritional aspects of fish for their
future knowledge up-gradation, being conducted at CIFRI, Barrackpore, on regular basis. The training
modules covered on-field exposure visits, field demonstrations and in-house class interactions with the
scientists of ICAR-CIFRI including laboratory practicals on sediment and water chemistry, biotic
organisms, identification of different fish species, ornamental fish culture aspects, fish diseases, GIS
mapping etc. The interactive sessions involved the present aspects of inland open water fisheries and
problems faced by the local fishers. The students were also engaged to submit write-up on different
aspects of inland fisheries management through group activities. The support extended by CIFRI library
was mention-worthy in this regard. The knowledge gap in regard to delineation of inland water bodies
through GIS platform, limno-chemistry of sediment & water, ecology & fisheries of rivers & estuarine
ecosystem, enhancement of fisheries in reservoirs and wetlands, pollutants in inland waters, fish
diseases & their control in open waters, crafts & gear, importance of SIFS as health food, feed
formulation, socio-economics including marketing, would be reduced after completion of the training.
Training program of such kinds would be of immense help in developing future road map for the students
and selecting their target to be achieved in coming future through concerted effort & endeavour.
