1st National Training on ‘Advanced Analytical Tools - Gas Chromatography Mass spectrometry’ was inaugurated today by Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI at CIFRI HQs Barrackpore. This training course organised by the Fishery Resource and Environmental Management (FREM) Division include: Introduction to chromatography and GC-MS; Lipid extraction and FAME preparation; Fatty acid analysis by GC-MS; Volatile analysis by Head Space GC-MS and Pesticide residue analysis by GC. Total nine participants including research scholars and post-docs from OUAT, Bhubaneswar and Vidyasagar University, Medinipur, West Bengal as well as scientists and technical staff from the institute are attending the training.

At the outset, Dr. B.P. Mohanty, Course Coordinator and Head, FREM Division welcomed all the participants and gave a brief overview of the schedule of five-days training. He appreciated the interest of the participants for this course and heads of their institutes for sponsoring their candidature. Dr V. R. Suresh and Dr U. K. Sarkar, Heads of REF and RWF Division, respectively, in their remarks emphasized the usefulness of such training programs and also appreciated the efforts for conducting training in such areas of advanced instrumentation. Dr B. K. Das, Director, in his address, stressed upon the need to learn the basics of chromatographic techniques and chronological development of chromatography science which would help the researchers to apply latest and appropriate tools and techniques in various analysis pertinent to the health of fish and inland aquatic environment. He also urged the participants to use this opportunity to the maximum extent possible for their as well as their institutes’ benefit. Finally, the inaugural programme was concluded with vote of thanks delivered by Dr. S.K. Nag, Principal Scientist, FREM Division and Co-Coordinator of the training program. Dr. Soma Das Sarkar, Scientist, FREM Division anchored the event.
