A three days skill development training programme on “Culture Based Fisheries for improving Livelihood of Inland Fishers” was inaugurated on 9 July, 2018 at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore. The skill development programme is sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, Govt. of India under CSS Blue Revolution Scheme. The objective of the training is to build capacity of fishers on various aspects of culture based fisheries and other fisheries enhancement technologies in inland open waters with special reference to floodplain wetlands. The training programme is being attended by 50 fishers and farmers from 5 wetlands belonging to Nadia, 24 Parganas (N) and Hooghly districts of West Bengal.

In his opening remarks Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI welcomed all the farmers to the Institute and hoped that this training will be fruitful. He further emphasized on ecosystem functions and social benefits derived from the floodplain wetlands and their potential for enhancing livelihood of the fishers. This was followed by introduction of the farmers. Dr. V. R. Suresh, Head, Riverine Ecology and Fisheries Division remarked that scientific interventions developed by ICAR-CIFRI have proved their potential in enhancing fish production from floodplain wetlands of West Bengal, Assam and Bihar and encouraged farmers to manage their resources wisely implementing these technologies. Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Head, Fisheries Resource Environment Management Division urged the farmers to make full use of the exposure and training program being provided to them by ICAR-CIFRI to build their capacity. Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Head, Reservoir and Wetland Fisheries Division called upon the stakeholders to utilize the natural wetland resources to the fullest using scientific management technologies for enhancing fish production and livelihood.
