ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research institute celebrated National Fish Farmers’ Day on 10 th
July, 2018 at its headquarter Barrackpore, Kolkata. The day is commemorated in remembrance
of the revolutionary Induced breeding technology developed by Dr. Hira Lal Choudhury and Dr.
Alikhuni, scientists of this institute on 10 July 1957. Welcoming the gathering, Dr. B.K Das said
the epoch making technology have been evolved by the CIFRI Scientists Dr. Hira Lal
Choudhury and Dr Alikhuni have facilitated the blue revolution in the country. Dr. B.K Das also
informed that for last 72 years CIFRI is significantly contributing for generating dynamic
knowledge base through interdisciplinary research and presently looking forward to work on
major issues of natural resource management. Dr. A. N. Roy, Director NIRJAFT emphasized
upon the role of fisheries sector in livelihood security in West Bengal. Prof. B. C. Mall, Vice
Chancellor of JIS Group University, Kalyani and Guest of honour in his address shared his
experience of 40 years working in aquaculture engineering sector. He congratulated the team
CIFRI for immensely contributing in fish production enhancement in the country. Shri Swami
Atmapriyanand ji, Vice Chancellor of Ram Krishna Vivekanand University and research
institute, Belur Math and Chief Guest of the function stressed on the role played by nature for
providing us food. In his address he praised the initiatives made by CIFRI for the beel and open
water fisheries development in the country.
Around 150 fish farmers from various states, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar
Pradesh and Chhattisgarh participated in the event. Eleven fish farmers from West Bengal,
Odisha, Telangana, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh were awarded “Best Fish Farmer Award” at
the function for their contribution to fisheries and aquaculture sector of India.. The awardees also
shared their experience in fish farming with the audience. Two training programmes were
organized under Skill development programme and tribal sub plan for the wetland fish farmers of
west Bengal and tribal fish farmers of Sundarbans. was organized on the day aiming at providing
solution to the problems faced by the fishers and fish farmers. Dr. A. K. Das, principal Scientist,
