Training programme on ‘Productivity enhancement and extra income generation for rubber growers through fisheries’ organized for farmers of Meghalaya on 18.07.18.

A training programme on ‘Productivity enhancement and extra income generation for rubber growers through fisheries’ was organized by the Rubber Board Regional Office (RB RO), Guwahati in collaboration with ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati for farmers of Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya at Conservation Training Institute (CTI), Byrnihat, Meghalaya on 18.07.18. Majority of the rubber growers of Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya have waterbodies (i.e., various sizes of ponds) that are not properly utilized for pisciculture. The main objective of this one-day training programme was to train a group of such farmers to take up fish culture in those waterbodies in a scientific manner. Shri K. Suresh Babu, Development Officer, RB RO, Guwahati welcomed the guests, invitees and participants. The training programme was inaugurated by the Joint Director of CTI, Shri D. Shallam in the presence of other staff of RB RO, Guwahati (Shri S. Balakrishna, Development Officer and Ms. Nandini Gautam, Field Officer) and scientists of ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati (Dr. Dipesh Debnath and Mrs. Niti Sharma). In his inaugural address, the Joint Director of CTI urged the farmers to take utmost benefit of the training programme so that their available water resources could be properly utilized for earning additional income.

In the technical session, Dr. Debnath explained the basic principles and practices of pisciculture and interacted with the farmers on various aspects of aquaculture. Mrs. Sharma elaborated on seed production and nursery rearing of fish seed in a lucid manner. Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI also explained the prospects of pen and cage aquaculture in larger waterbodies. Shri Balakrishna explained rubber cultivation in brief. A total of 20 farmers participated in the training programme and raised queries related to pisciculture. Ms. Nandini Gautam expressed her gratitude towards the Director, ICAR- CIFRI, Dr. B.K. Das and the Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati, Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya for permitting two fisheries scientists as a resource persons for discussing various aspects of fisheries and aquaculture with the rubber growers of Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya.
