ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati conducted a NFDB sponsored five days (06-10
August, 2018) training programme on ‘Beel fisheries management for livelihood
improvement’ for the fisheries officials of Northeast states
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) Regional Centre, Guwahati
organized a 5 day training of trainers programme form 6-10 August, 2018, sponsored
by National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad on ‘Beel fisheries
management for livelihood improvement’ under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das,
Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Course Director of the training programme
and Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head (Acting), ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati
and Co-ordinator of the training programme. 26 participants attended the programme
comprising 18 Fishery Development Officers from Department of Fisheries, Govt. of
Assam, 2 officials from Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Nagaland and 2
entrepreneurs from Assam. Joint Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Manipur, Mr.
Khamsing Ahum along with 3 District Fishery Officers also attended the programme.
The training programme focussed on various aspects of beel fisheries management and
development, primarily on stock enhancement cage and pen culture in beels besides
focussing on soil and water quality management in beels, disease management,
nutritional aspects, role of biotic communities in beel fisheries management and
guidelines for beel fisheries management along with practical sessions on soil and
water quality analysis and collection and preservation of biotic communities from
beels. Dr. Utpal Sarma, Head of Remote Sensing Division, ASTEC, Guwahati also
delivered a lecture on application of remote sensing and GIS as a decision support tool
in beel fisheries management. Field visit to Samguri beel, Nagaon and 47 Morakolong
beel, Morigaon was conducted as a part of the training programme on 9 August, 2018,
to give a glimpse of cage and pen culture activities of ICAR-CIFRI being undertaken in
those two beels. The chief guest of the valedictory session was Sjt. Parimal
Suklaibaidya, Hon’ble Minister of Fisheries, Excise, Environment and Forest, Govt. of
Assam, Dispur and was accompanied by Shri Rakesh Kumar, Secretary to Govt. of
Assam, Department of Fisheries Commissioner and Secretary to Govt. of Assam,
Department of Excise as Guest of Honour. In his address to the gathering, Hon’ble
Minister stated that there is a vast potential for fisheries development in NE region. He
stressed on management of beels of the region for enhancing fish production in the
region. He urged the fisheries officials and entrepreneurs to apply the knowledge
gathered during the training programme and apply the same in their respective area. He
also stressed on the need for conservation of wetlands. Shri Rakesh Kumar, in his
address stated that fisheries is the largest sector in Assam. He emphasized on the need
to update knowledge on the part of the officials. He stressed on bringing about
mechanization in fisheries with the use of aerators, solar pumps and cage aquaculture
which is the need of the hour. He further stated that fish productivity from the NE
region in general and Assam in particular needs to be further enhanced and requested
ICAR-CIFRI to conduct more number of trainings for farmers and officials. Scientists
of ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati Dr. Sona Yengkokpam, Dr. Pronob Das,
Niti Sharma, Simanku Borah, along with Technical Officers K.K. Sarma, B. C. Ray and
A. Kakati took active part in conducting the whole programme and making it a
successful one.
