Skill development programme on canal fisheries development in Sundarabans
A skill development program was organized for 52 farmers of Sundarbans at ICAR-Central
Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore during 17-19 August 2018 on “Canal
Fisheries Development for Income Generation of Fishers”. The program is sponsored by
National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, Govt. of India under CSS Blue Revolution
Scheme. The training was organized based on the need of farmers as Sundarbans has vast
canal resources, which has tremendous potential for the fisheries development. The fishers
were trained on various aspects of canal fisheries which include fish culture practices,
suitable species selection, water and soil quality management, importance of natural fish
food organisms etc. Hands on training on water and soil quality analysis and exposure visit
to canals of Sundarbans were also arranged for the trainees at Namkhana area of
Sundarbans. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI interacted with the trainees and asked to
promote canal fisheries in Sundarbans area for the sustainable utilization of canal resources.

Parida, Mr. Mitesh H. Ramteke, Mr. Tasso Tayung and Mr. Pranab Gogoi.
