Enclosure culture systems have tremendous potential in augmenting fish production from Indian reservoirs (3.5 million ha) and wetlands (0.5 million ha) owing to the magnitude of the resources. The institute has standardized and demonstrated the enclosure culture technology in inland open waters which lead to wide spread adoption by more than 16 states in the country in ‘Mission Mode’ through various schemes of Govt. of India and State Govts. Cages and Pens can be used for raising (in situ) fish fingerlings as well as production of table size fishes. This will reduce the dependence on land based nurseries and also improve per unit fish productivity and production from reservoirs and wetlands. However, there is lack of trained manpower to successfully implement these technologies to harness the potential and also to impart training to the stakeholders. In this connection, ICAR-CIFRI is organizing NFDB sponsored Training of Trainers (ToT) on ‘’Enclosure Culture (Cage & Pen) for Inland Fisheries Management’’ during 27-31 August 2018. The training programme was inaugurated by Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI on 27 th August 2018. In the inaugural address, he has highlighted the status, potential and issues pertaining to enclosure culture in India in the context of doubling farmer’s income. He also urged the trainees to gather knowledge and to disseminate the same to the actual stake holders. i.e. farmers/fishers/entrepreneurs through skill development programmes. Dr. A. K. Das, In- Charge, E&T Cell welcomed the participants to the training programme, being attended by 25 officials of Department of Fisheries (DoF) belonging to 10 States of India. Dr. V. R. Suresh, Head, REF Division, Dr. B. P. Mohanty, Head, FREM Division and Dr. U. K. Sarkar, RWF Division also addressed the trainees. The trainees will be exposed to on-field demonstration on cage and pen culture besides in-house lectuers on various aspects of enclosure culture. Dr. S. K. Nag, Principal Scientist proposed the formal vote of thanks. The training programme is being well co-ordinated by Dr. A. K. Das, Principal Scientist, Shri. Mishal P and Mrs. Gunjan Karnatak, Scientists, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore.
