ICAR-CIFRI conducted ‘Advanced training on sediment and water quality assessment
for managing sustainable fisheries in inland open waters’ from 27 th August-1 st
September, 2018.
A six days training programme entitled ‘Advanced training on sediment and water quality
assessment for managing sustainable fisheries in inland open waters’ was organised from 27 th
August-1 st September, 2018 at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore. Assistant Forest Officers from
DVC, Senior Research Fellows and Young Professionals engaged in different projects at the
institute and other university, Post Graduate fishery and zoology students from different
universities participated in the training. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. B.K. Das,
Director, ICAR-CIFRI on 27 th August. In his address Dr. Das explained the importance of
sediment and water quality assessment and how it was related with biodiversity abundance
and productivity of aquatic ecosystems. The course content was comprised of theories
covering all important aspects of water and sediment physico-chemical properties, their
interrelationships, analytical methods and some basics of analytical chemistry. The
theoretical contents were covered with 16 lectures including that of two guest speakers. To
impart hands on training on analysis of physico-chemical parameters of soil and water, four
practical classes were conducted. A trip was also arranged on Hooghly River in which
participants were shown the techniques of water and sediment sampling. All the trainees were
very enthusiastic and were keenly following the lectures as well as the practicals. A post
training evaluation was conducted on the last day and the participants did fairly well. The
valedictory function was organised in the afternoon of 1 st September in which Dr. V.R.
Suresh, Director (In-charge) & HoD, REF Division; Dr. B.P. Mohanty, HoD, FREM Division
and Dr. U.K. Sarkar, HoD, RWF Division spoke highlighting the importance of conducting
such training programme and also enquired for the participants about the usefulness of this
training in their future career. The certificates of participation, lecture notes and practical
manual were distributed to each trainee. The training was coordinated by Dr. S.K. Nag, co-
